in order to preserve the branch like they did above the bed do you need to spray it with some kind of sealent along with the paint?
Shellac the branch first. This is a coating similar to making a plastic sealant. No need for painting the branch, of course, do what makes you happy. Then you can attach it to the wall and paint around it. You can use brackets, small enough so you can’t see them, hang it from some point in the painting. If you’re thinking of gluing it, get some professional advice.
Shellac can be purchased at any hardware store or any art supply stores.
